Though the exact origins of Detroit’s favorite potato chip remain mired in legend, Better Made launched in the kitchens of Cross Moceri and Pete Cipriano, two immigrant cousins from Italy. As these potato chips proved popular among picnicking Detroiters in the 1920s, demand necessitated several production expansions before the company settled in their current location on Gratiot Avenue in 1949. Today, Better Made has earned the distinction of being the oldest and only locally owned chip company to in the state. It continues to supports its roots in its three-ingredient recipe: locally grown potatoes, Michigan salt, and American cottonseed oil.
