A 1920s special bulletin from Michigan Agricultural College (now MSU) listed Michigan as one of America’s leading potato growing states. With its favorable soil and climate conditions and close proximity to markets, Michigan ranked fourth in the nation for potato production between 1915 and 1919. In 1921, farmers planted 340,000 acres of potatoes and produced 1.36 billion poundsIn 2016, Michigan ranked eighth in the nation in potato production, planted 46,000 acres, and produced 1.7 billion pounds.
